Windows Vista updates

My sister's laptop is having a little problem. Windows update produces an error code, 80240016, when she tries to get both windows updates and Windows Defender updates.
I have checked the Services to make sure they were not disabled and also have
eliminated firewall and antivirus programs as suspects. I remember this happened
to me a couple years back but can't remember how I fixed it. Any clues are appreciated.

Sounds like potential malware, I know some will block Win updates and also updates to the major antivirus products. Did you scan the system to make sure it was clean?

Roll back to the pre-update restore point and get the updates manually. Start with the system updates and once they are applied, create another restore point. Then try the Defender updates.

Not malware. It turns out it's a registry problem. I have tried a couple of fixes but they haven't worked.
