Windows Vista Ultimate 3-pack DVD OEM @ the 'egg

That's $200 a pop. Cheapest I've seen otherwise is $250ish for the Ultimate upgrades. Pretty tempting!!

of course one must be aware of the limitations with the oem and changing parts like motherboards around as we like to do.. unless that has changed?

I donno about Vista, but with XP you could usually call to activate and just tell them it's not installed on another computer, and they would put it through and give you the next set of keys in the activation process. I'm gonna go with business retail... the box looks so cool!!!

From what I think I'm seeing, the OEM isn't as 'transportable' as XP in the activation area, especially on mobos. Hope that loosens up a bit, but I'm going Ultimate retail upgrade just for peace of mind and all that.

I had planned on OEM Ultimate but unless it gets cleared up really quickly I'm staying retail. I have plans for the 2 copies of home premium you can get for 49 a pop.

I'm in for a copy of home premium.
I don't plan on changing any major hardware for awhile.
120 seems pretty cheap.

now they have business oen 1 user listed for 149 and ultimate oem 1 user for 199.. home basic for 99.. all with free 3 day shipping.

hmm

I can't understand why they're still keeping the 64 bit versions separate. I also can't believe that Newegg only has Home Premium in a 64 bit version, but nothing else!

they've been adding through the afternoon.. maybe as they go through their incoming shipment.. first was 3 user ultimate @599 then they've added more as the afternoon went.

I've noticed that the retail version of Vista aren't tagged with 32-bit or 64-bit, only the OEM versions. Does this mean that the retail includes both and the OEM only one version?

I am pretty sure that is the case.

So does anyone have links to back up what has been said here about the OEM being limited on activations? I'd hate to buy the OEM from the 'egg, and then lose all use of it should I decide that my DFI LanParty becomes outdated, or if I have to reinstall more times than they think is Kosher.

What everyone should do, is get a Technet Direct subscription for $350. You can download, install, and activate Vista Ultimate up to 10 times.

I was thinking about doing that, but then I realized that I was expected to uninstall my copies in one year when my subscription ran out or pony up another $350 for one more year.

Now I'm leaning toward the OEM version.

Remember that's $350 a year. If you don't keep your subscription active, Microsoft MAY disable Vista after the year's up. They have NOT been doing this with XP, as far as I know, but nobody knows whether Microsoft will enforce its subscription licensing terms with Vista.

While the OEM is a nice price, no way am I going to limit myself like that. I have an xp disc to feed the retail upgrade of ultimate.. Saving $59 over the OEM (full, I know), but when I like to swap stuff a LOT, makes no sense in my case.

Microsoft.com/Piracy

"Don't transfer OEM software from one computer system to another.
OEM software licenses cannot be transferred from one computer system to another, even if the computer system on which it was originally installed is no longer in use. "

-Note: Microsoft now defines the PC as the "motherboard".

You can RE-INSTALL OEM software on the SAME MOTHERBOARD as often as necessary. If done too frequently, you may have to call MS to Activate.
