All,
I have seen copies of Vista that have 2 DVDs included.
They say 1 is 32 bit and 1 is 64 bit.
I asked and the DVDs have different product keys on them.

does this mean that I can install Vista on 1 machine as 32 bit and 1 machine as 64 bit or are the keys linked somehow?

You can use as many copies as you have valid licenses for. One retail-boxed Vista package contains one license to use Vista, so that means you can install & run 32-bit or 64-bit, but not both at the same time. It also contains only one product key, not two.

So If I buy 2 DVDs, 1 64 bit and 1 32 bit, both have their own unique product key on their own stickers, this would be 2 fully functional copies assuming I have a license for each copy?
logically this sounds right,
what defines the license on Vista disks?

Windows Vista Retail box has 2 DVD's with one product key license- i have installed only x64.

you are not supposed to install it on more than one computer. But you can transfer the license to a new computer. After the transfer you should remove Windows Vista from the old computer.

If you want to install both 32 and 64 on the same computer- you can do so on a Virtual PC (applicable only for Ultimate/Business version) or you can buy additional license.

If you upgrade from Windows XP to Vista from the retail upgrade version then your XP license will be marked as invalid to stop further XP installations. btw upgrade retail versions has 2 DVD's too.

See now if you are at a retail partner of Intel's and you bought the intel Retail Access bundle this year, you do actually get two product keys, each seperate for x86 and x64. I don't know if installing both of them on different machines would violate your license, as I have not read the fine print on it. I didn't buy the bundle this year, so I would not know.

However, the copies you are thinking of have probably floated to you from the Intel Retail access bundle deal.
