Hi guys,

I'm debating if I should get Vista or not, I currently have Windows XP home, it's 32bit (I think). I don't have a DX10 card, nor do I have any plans to get one soon, other than having DX10, is there anything else that it would be worth getting for.

Granted it looks amazing! but is it worth the up(down)grade?

i have Vista Ultimate 32 bit on a backup system so i
can study speech recognition stuff.

the only reason, right now, i would use it on my
primary system is to get voice interoperability with
favorite aps.

it's almost like buying a suit or something. i suggest
using a friend's Vista system for an hour, or at a
university computer lab or something. doing normal
tasks, like a file search, looking for stuff in Control
Panel.

I have two desktops - one with Vista Ultimate and the other with XP Pro. I still do all my important stuff in XP Pro. Vitsa is more like a toy to play with - almost as good as a game. :)

Unless you have a specific reason to get vista then don't bother. Its not worth the money, and there isn't actually much in it that gives it an edge over XP. People may tell you about superfetch (save a few seconds when loading something) or increased security (you will notice UAC as soon as you start vista believe me) and personally i dont think they are worth getting vista for. But thats my opinion, judge for yourself.

I think the improved Vista security is worth the upgrade by itself, if you're interested in staying ahead of the bad guys for the next 5 years. But yeah, see if you can get some time on a Vista system and try it out.

My laptop is XP Pro. My wife's laptop is Vista Home. She wants my laptop. I don't want to use her laptop. For my house, we did try Vista and we're not satisfied with it. Gladly we didn't spend money on Vista and it won't cost me a penny to put XP on her machine.

I agree with the others, test drive it first before you buy it.

From what I saw speed (programs start slightly faster) and visual effects is all Vista has. More cons than pros from my experience. Speedstep didnt work on my laptop (weird) but there might be an update to fix that problem now. Also there was constant disk usage even when idling and the firewall Im used to, Kerio 2.1.5 didnt work. XP has always been rock solid for me so I couldnt find any reason to waste my time troubleshooting.

I wouldn't bother unless your system is new. That said, I think Vista is great. It's an improvement over XP if you have the appropriate hardware.

I love Vista but with that being said I would only do it on a new build. I your XP set-up is running fine no need to trash it for Vista. If you are going to do a reformat you might as well upgrade and be done with it. We will all be on vista sooner than later(windows users anyways) so you might as well get used to it.

I would mostly agree with the majority. I can't say that I either love or hate Vista, it is different, not necessarily better or worse. I have had the opportunity to work with it quite a bit, and I prefer XP, all in all. Given a new computer, with a legal copy of Vista, I would go with that. On an older computer, with a good working copy of XP, I would definitely not spend the money to go to Vista.

To reply directly to the OP's actual question, "Is it worth it?":

If you're asking about the financial cost, then no, it is not worth the cost, in my opinion. If you're not concerned with cost, then I would answer, "It depends." If your XP is fouled up, and you have to re-install the OS anyway, then which OS to install is a toss-up. If your XP is running fine, then I would say leave it alone. Vista very well might not like your hardware, in which case you could waste a lot of your time before giving up and going back to XP.

Youre right. Security isnt that important.
