Hi

i recently tried the vista beta on my other drive while dual booting it with xp, i formatted the drive but im still getting the boot screen to pick between the two. In boot.ini it says vista uses a different file.. but the driver has been formatted ... what can i do?

yes i have but the problem is the vista boot file is different and even tho i formatted the drive with vista on it..... its still coming up with the vista dual boot screen not the xp one.

ok.. so you are saying, you installed Vista on, lets say, drive D?

And now you have wiped it?

Ok.. Vista modifies the boot sector, which is on the C drive/partition
Boot up your Windows XP disc, so you can get into the Recovery Console

"Starting the Windows Recovery Console
To start the Windows Recovery Console, use one of the following methods: ? Use the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM to start your computer. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press 'R" to repair."

Run "FIXMBR"

There is nother boot config command, but I have never had any experience with it. Its the BOOTCFG command. It allows you to rebuild the boot configuration. But, I'm going to assume this is for the XP boot sector, so, it would most likely not work until AFTER you have run FIXMBR.

"BOOTCFG
Use this command for boot configuration and recovery. This command has the following options:
bootcfg /add
bootcfg /rebuild
bootcfg /scan
bootcfg /list
bootcfg /disableredirect
bootcfg /redirect [portbaudrate] | [useBiosSettings]
Examples:
bootcfg /redirect com1 115200
bootcfg /redirect useBiosSettings
You can use the following options:
/add : Adds a Windows installation to the boot menu list.
/rebuild : Iterates through all Windows installations so that you can specify which installations to add.
/scan : Scans all disks for Windows installations and displays the results so that you can specify which installations to add.
/default : Sets the default boot entry.
/list : Lists the entries already in the boot menu list.
/disableredirect : Disables redirection in the boot loader.
/redirect : Enables redirection in the boot loader, with the specified configuration."

Ok.. install Windows 2003 on that empty partition. Windows 2003 should overwrite any boot sectors. Windows 2003 uses the same typical boot.ini such as XP. Windows 2003 may make itself the primary operating system in the boot menu. No big deal though..

Heh 2003 actualy shows up on the vista boot one... so i ended up with "old version of windows" "windows" "2003 set up" and when i went to old windows (xp) it then goes to the windows xp boot and i gotta pick between xp and 2003 again.. so i didnt worry about finishing 2003. Ill do it once this gets worked out.
