Windows & USB 2.0 problem

I have an Athlon 64 system on a VIA K8T800 chipset. It's supposed to support USB 2.0, but whenever I plug a USB 2 device, I get this message (link to image). Basically, it's telling me that I don't have a USB 2.0 hub when I should. I have pretty recent VIA drivers installed.
Do you think it's a hardware problem (i.e. the board doesn't have USB 2.0) or is it some dumb software / driver thing?

Are you using the mobo USB connectors in the back or the front panel connections. Quite often the front panel cables are substandard or misconnected and won't make the grade for High Speed USB.

what OS are you using? Win98 beeds a patch I think and so does XP before Sp1 I think.

yup, winxp needs sp2 before it will recognise USB 2.0

I think you only need Sp1 before it will recognise USB 2.0

My recollections of "no USB 2.0" threads. Check at rear during troubleshooting.

win98se, updates required at http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

XP, sp1 or higher required.

Disconnect all front panel ports, remove and redetect usb ports.

Some video card "tuners" can corrupt the usb portion of bios. Clear bios and start off with defaults again.

My VIA experience is not recent, but in the past some special usb filter drivers were used. See if this can apply to you.

1. Install at least SP1.
2. Go to hardware manager and delete the USB ports. **
3. Reboot, let the USB get redetected.
4. USB version 2 works.

** Sometimes this is not required, but sometimes it is.

Thanks all, I was on vacation and had no internet connection. Which is nice every once in a while.
Anyhow, it's XP with SP2. I haven't tried removing the USB ports in the device manager, but I will.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there is a known problem with Windows XP SP2 and VIA USB 2.0 controllers used on mainboards with VIA chipsets or standalone USB 2.0 PCI cards. See this VIAArena Thread and the microsoft kb link as well

Good info, I haven't had any problems with my usb 2 devices and via chipset??
