I just redone my main hard drive this morning and got through putting everything back in and went to the Windows update screen to download the updates and SP2 and it wont do nothing. It just sits on the screen where you should get the authorize pop-up. I did get the pop-up once and clicked yes and then it said it was retrieving update list but it hung on that screen for about 15 mins. Now I cant get passed the first screen.

I have checked and have enabled updates and so forth.

Anybody got any idea's?

Do you have the correct date and have you chosen a language preference (tools> Internet options> languages)

You could use the direct approach and just download SP2 from here, that's the full-file installer.

If your system has no firewall and is at SP1a or earlier, then you could've already been infected by worms too. Doesn't take long once they find you, I guess ;) Here are some online antivirus scanners you could try if you like:
  • Symantec
  • Panda
  • TrendMicro
  • McAfee Stinger tool (hits a small set of common ones, not the full range). Note that if you don't actually close the hole, you can remove the worms but they'll come right back in again.

If you don't have anything else, enable Windows Firewall, aka Internet Connection Firewall prior to SP2, as a get-me-by.

edit: grrr, something funky goin' on with my links here, gimme a minute...

One other thing to check is that the BITS and Automatic Updates services are started. Did you do any "tweaks" and disable some services?

Thanks guys, I did a complete reinstall of windows and it seems to be working fine.

As for the Virus and Firewall I always install those before I put in my internet connection. I use McAffe Virus Protection and Firewall. Probably not the best but its what I got.
