Where does Windows save the temp files for Windows Update? (especially, where does Windows Update save SP2 before it installs)

I'm not positive, but check C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution... it's like 3MB on my PC, but when I was trying to install SP2 on my mom's PC, it was a couple 100 MB.
 
Not sure what you are looking for here.

Maybe go into Folder Options and make the change to Show hidden files and folders and check out the folder $hf_mig$ in C: \WINDOWS (assuming OS on drive C).
