windows update setup problem

I had a problem that I thought was caused by a corrupt version of Internet Explorer. (Win XP) I tried to install it. and setup said I had a newer version already installed. I have since found my problem and I don't want to do this install. Everything is working fine, except that every time I log on, the "Windows update: Internet Explorer and Internet Tools" setup starts up and wants to resume setup. I can click 'cancel', but then it comes up the next time I log on. If I hit 'continue' it tries and fails to install.

How can I get it to go away?

go to control pannel>performance and maintenance> system> automatic updates

disable windows update

if you still wanna use windows update there should be a link in the

start>all programs> windows update

you will have to manually check for updates

This was not an automatic update. I think I went into 'Add/Remove Windows components' and unchecked Internet Explorer and then rechecked it.
