Windows Update service problem

I updated a computer with SP2 and 40 some odd windows updates. I get the message about not having automatic updates enabled. Attempt to enable them and it will not allow me to do so.

Do some googling and find out that the windows update service is messed up. Try to enable it and it states that it has been marked for deletion. It has now been deleted it appears. Anyway to get it back short of reinstalling?
 
How about just getting rid of the annoying pop up bubbles?

Go to the security center in the control panel, when it loads up there is a link on the left that says, "change the way security center alerts me". Click on it and uncheck the items you don't want the bubbles for.

Have you rebooted since this started? If your in the middle of updating the WU components, this could be normal... (really guessing here tho, doesnt sound familiar).

 
Well it's not my computer so I would like to enable them. You cannot install windows updates through the website either.

Yes I have rebooted and thats when the service got deleted I believe.
 
So I reinstalled SP2 and it still doesn't work.

Does anyone know how to reinstall the automatic update service?

I didn't think deleting the service would be possible. Maybe try reinstalling Windows. Or, are you getting an error for a missing executable or something? If so, you may be able to find the file in the CABs on the CD.
 
Me either but some virus/spyware did it. I don't want to reinstall windows but at this point it looks like that is what I will be doing.

I just can't update windows at all.
