Windows Update reset

Is it safe to do WUR on a old Windows Vista PC?

I ask as I've done many things with on PCs but I've never come across, amazingly, doing a Windows Update reset.

Any ideas?

A "Windows Reset" wasn't introduced until Windows 8.

Just guessing here, but the MS Windows Update repair tool (if that's what you're talking about) makes a number of changes to the registry. I would doubt the registry settings in Vista are the same, but who knows? You'd probably be OK giving it a try as long as you set a Restore Point first.

Is anything truly safe?
As always, you need to make a backup anytime you dive into doing something like this.

That said, that isn't a total reset, that is for a very specific item to fix--How do I reset Windows Update components It may or may not work.

What are you trying to do? If you've got something acting up, try a sfc /scannow to verify your install.

My wife's vista laptop will not download W updates.

I've tried sfc but that's not resolved my matter.

What error code(s) are you receiving when updates fail to install?

Win8 and prev: Control Panel > Windows Update > View update history > double-click on an update for the error code.

There are no code errors it just sits at "Downloading" updates

Is the CPU usage quite high the whole time? I'm wondering whether this is basically the issue that Win7 had but still unfixed in Vista (ie. it takes hours to check for updates and consumes a single CPU core).

Yes it is.

I thought it was maybe the fan as that clearly wasn't happy until I stripped laptop and resolved the matter.

I also upped the ram to its max.

There are no code errors it just sits at "Downloading" updates
