Windows Update on a Netless box?

ok so I've got a computer with windows xp sp2 freshly installed but has not active internet connection and no ability to get one. the only way I know how to update all of the software and get all of the hotfixes installed is to download them from the windows update catalog one by one by hand...that is some 83 updates and I think I'd pull my hair out, does anyone know of an update pack or rollup available to ease the strain?

Unfortunetly no. You're either going to have to download all the updates and apply them offline or get the machine connectivity somehow.

I suppose if it was an option or if you had multiple machines you could setup a temporary VM and install WSUS, download the updates you want and than get your XP machine connectivity to the WSUS VM (even without internet connectivity). But that would also be quite a hassle...

For what its worth, the vast majority of hotfixes are there to fix security holes, which you absolutely do not need to worry about if the PC will never be connected to the net.

damn you microsoft!

yeah except I need to get WMP 11 on it so I can install the Zune software and get it to work and can't do that "without required windows updates" that are "missing"

So is temporarily connecting it totally out?

Autopatcher would fill your needs exactly.

Sadly Microsoft killed the project for some bizarre reason, but if you get a friend with net access to do a google search, you will probably be able to find the August 2007 Full update, which was the last one made.

It contains all the security patches you need, plenty of hotfixes, IE7, WMP11 etc, etc.

An absolutely brilliant application and very sadly missed.

1. Download nLite
2. Xable's Light Update Pack (Latest version is September 24th 2007]
3. Create a custom CD using nLite - you can also perform some tweaks or make an unattended installataion.
4. Download the installers for IE7, WMP11, Defender, .net Framework and burn them to a CD.

Problem you might face: you won't be able to Validate Windows (WGA) and this will stop you from installing IE/WMP/WD. If you can't go online for validation, you might have to look for alternate methods (like a WGA crack) or extract the installer files and update Windows manually. Google is your friend here.
