Windows Update - Now computer is insanely slow!

Automatic windows 7 update from a few days ago did something bad...

Every 30 minutes or so my computer goes brain-dead. If I open up a few links, they load forever. If I open word, it loads forever. If i open MY DOCUMENTS it will load forever. Once forever (about 5 full minutes) is over, everything loads all at once and all is well for another 30 minutes. BSOD after not loading most recently.

What's strange is youtube videos will continue to download and I can still click around. The hard drive doesn't spin at all until everything decides to load again.


What's going on? Is there a way to undo the last windows update?


grr it's happening right now! I can still post, use this one tab, but all other tabs do not load. Neither will any new processes.

I was going to use that as a last alternative I have no idea the last time I created one. I guess if this is specific to me and my computer, I'll try that.

In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Selective Startup on the General tab.
Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
Note The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.
Click the Services tab.
Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
Click Disable All, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart.

Sounds like your HD is failing.

to check if the hdd is failing just go to device manager click on the controller right clcik on the controller that the drive is on if its shows pio mode then its time to backup

Auto update on windows 7 creates a restore point prior to installation for reasons like this so you can revert back to a configuration that works. Check it out, make a note of the update KB number so you know not to download & install it when windows tries to install it again.

Check your drive for errors. Right click the drive in Windows Explorer, Properties, tools, check now.

thanks for everybody's help. checked the drive, looks ok.

I lied it didn't work. should I use the utility tool and scan for errors? too bad if it's the HD, my 5 year warranty ended about a month ago

Run a chkdsk /r
Otherwise download the scan utility from your hdd manufacturer and scan the drive for errors aswell

ran chkdsk no problems. also noticed i have the exact same problem on my laptop...any ideas?

Have you tried the system restore on either the desktop or laptop to just before the update to see if it fixes it?

on both computers, the earliest system restore I can choose is after the update that created this mess. are there previous system restores that don't pop up on the easy menu?

I don't use system restore often, but I don't think there are any "hidden" ones that aren't shown.

Are there any other updates available? It sounds like it may be driver conflicts.
