Windows Update KB898461 disables web access

After PC is reboot after installation of KB898461, no web pages can be accessed any more, either with Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 3. The browsers find the web sites, then wait for responses and eventually time out, as if the web servers were offline. "ipconfig /all" shows that everything is fine, with correct IP, subnet mask, gateway, DNS server, and DHCP server. "ping" gets correct responses from web host. And "tracert" get correct responses too and are not timed out. Had to use system restore to undo the installation of KB898461 and bring back web access.

Windows Update will not offer any other updates, critical or not, until after this update (KB898461) is installed.

Setup:

WinXP with SP3.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ CPU
Tyan K8E-SLI mother

Anyone got similar experience?

Odd, that's an update from 2005. It should be a part of SP3. I'm not sure why a package installer update would cut off internet access, at any rate.

I woke up this morning and had to restart. Then I HAD NO INTERNET!
I felt like Stan's Dad in that South Park episode until I read this thread
on another computer, uninstalled Zone Alarm, and got back online
in no time.
Thanks for saving my butt yet again guys!

Thanks very much for your posts, guys. Yes, I use Zone Alarm. Several updates, including KB951748, were installed before I rebooted and lost internet access. But no updates except SP3 is listed in "Add or Remove Programs" in Control Panel since I've used system restore to undo the updates. For now, I won't install KB951748 update until the issue with Zone Alarm is resolved. When I started Windows Update and clicked on "Review your update history", all the updates that were installed right before losing internet access showed up and their status were "succeeded", even though they are not on my PC any more. The history remains unchanged after I deleted all browsing history data from Internet Explorer, including cookies, history, and temporary internet files. How does Windows Update know about these update history?

As ViRGE pointed out, KB898461 is an update from 2005 and it is strange that it is even offered when I have SP3. What is even worse than that is that Windows Update only shows KB898461 and KB892130. None of the updates since SP3 is shown. I am trying to figure out a way to get to the newer updates without installing KB898461. A search on the internet showed that KB898461 replaced some newer version of Windows system files with older versions.

it's not just zone alarm, it's basically any firewall including MS's own windows firewall. disable firewall and it's fine.

Does it effect hardware firewalls like in a router? I did an update a few days ago and my internet has been very spotty. Lots of webpages timeout.

we were warned of it at work. and i've had to disable VISS firewalls, Norton Firewalls, Windows Firewalls AND MaCafee firewalls, in order to get people online.

so i'm suspecting its true. or these people had their firewalls set too tight and were just unaware of it.

Im running an older version of ZA and also have this problem.
As noted above, putting Firewall to "medium" worked.
So I guess I have to buy a new firewall!

I know Windows Firewall works fine with the update.

Or just download/install the latest version of ZA.

I have not had a problem with 5 units on Norton and 1 on Trend Micro all still access the internet fine.

Any idea where your IT dept heard this? The reason I ask is that I'm with Microsoft's enterprise network support team. We have not seen any issues that I am aware of involving anything but Zonealarm.

Have you called any of these cases in to determine root cause?

I had this issue with an 2 XP boxes after installing SP3 and I found that it was an issue with the Linksys Router firmware WRT54G V8.0.

A Firmware update fixed the issue for me on both boxes.

Try connecting without the router straight to the modem as a test.
