Windows update infinite loop

I had a problem that I thought was caused by a corrupt version of Internet Explorer. (Win XP) I tried to install it. and setup said I had a newer version already installed. I have since found my problem and I don't want to do this install. Everything is working fine, except that every time I log on, the "Windows update: Internet Explorer and Internet Tools" setup starts up and wants to resume setup. I can click 'cancel', but then it comes up the next time I log on. If I hit 'continue' it tries and fails to install.

How can I get it to go away?

Remove it from Programs -> Startup or from the Registry.
As I am in Linux at present and cannot verify the following, you have to find the following approximate registry path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

And see if there's anything like IESetup in there. If so, delete that particular value.
