Windows Update and Microsoft Update download OK but fail on install

I've got a new install of XP SP3 with nothing else on it. Each time I run Windows Update or Microsoft Update it will find critical things to install. But it will only download them and then fail on the installation part. Any ideas?

Thanks

Have a look in the event logs to see if there is an indication or at least a logged event of the failure and post it here.

MS provides free support for Windows Update issues. If the machine doesn't just get out of its funk after a reboot or two and a few hours to do housecleaning stuff, call them.

Did you use nlite or anything like that to install this copy? Are you positive that you didn't exclude some component that might be needed for certian hotfixes to install?

By chance, is your error code (if you can find it) 0x8002004 or something like that?

It was a full blown XP install from original DVD.

The event log doesn't show anything...it's like it never happened. It downloads fine but as soon as it gets to where it should be installing it fails immediately.

After further digging I figured it out. I found the folling post which fixed the problem:

reregister your update dlls
Copy the lines below into notepad then save them as update.bat. Then run it (double click on the saved file)

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
