Yes yes we all say that we hate windows and we all use some form of Unux(Linux) to prove it.

Stopped reading right there. You're not speaking for everyone, not even close.

Windows 7 is a fantastic OS and fits my needs quite perfectly.

Microsoft can do whatever they want, people will defend them no matter how bad Windows 8 is, and the people who complain will eventually use it anyway.

They've basically already abandoned PC gaming.

Go ahead, switch to Linux or a Mac and see how many games you can play. MS makes Directx which is still the most advanced API on the market. They don't have to make Directx and games could still be created in openGL, but the fact is they've got their hot little fingers all over that market and never intend to let it go.

Because there are so many alternatives to directX for gaming right? You can spew the market crap all you want but the truth is there are no alternatives that even come close.

Also windows 8 is for tablets. It's horrendous for a desktop and is absolutely worthless for an office environment as well. For tablets? Pretty decent.

lolwut?

OpenGL is not dead, and never has been. Most game engines have OpenGL renderers but they just aren't used. RAGE was the last major game to use OpenGL AFAIK.

Dead was the wrong word. More like irrelevant and not the driving force behind gaming or hardware.

They've basically already abandoned PC gaming.

PC gaming is not abandoned, new games and gaming graphics cards for the PC are coming out all the time and gaming laptops keep getting better each year, now you can play games like BF3 and Skyrim on high or ultra settings with latest laptops/notebooks,remember few years ago when nobody would touch a laptop/notebook for serious PC gaming.

I hear this phase every year " PC gaming abandoned" wish I had £/$ for everytime I heard that , I would be millionaire by now :) .

Btw Microsoft know its in their best interest to keep PC gaming alive.

With the retirement of Bill Gates things are bound to progress on a different path. I always assumed Gates was responsible for all things gaming related at Microsoft. On a happier note, with the passing of what's his name over at Apple, maybe they will become more gamer friendly.

edit: btw, this is the first I've ever heard of Windows 8 but I LOVE Windows 7, I paid $350 for it so I'm good for a while. No need to change.

They are still making Directx, because they need it for Xbox.

They converted their PC gaming studios to Xbox gaming studios, or shut them down.

They get companies to stop making PC games or to delay them so they can make them Xbox exclusives.

Games for Windows live was horrible and really just a way to transition gamers and developers to Xbox.

They abandoned the PC Gaming Alliance.

They shut down Microsoft Gaming Zone.

Didn't they stop making joysticks, and now only make gamepads?

With friends like Microsoft, who needs enemies.

The reason that people use DirectX instead of OpenGL is because developers have little faith in the consortium that runs OpenGL.

MS made OpenGL somewhat irrelevent because their documentation is about 100 times better than any kind of OpenGL documentation. The two APIs are feature comparible (DX11/OpenGL 4.2), but the fact that OpenGL provides no sample code and terrible documentation (basically the minimum amount you can get away with) makes DX11 a favorable API to use. Most real useful information about OpenGL is scattered across the web and throughout the poorly updated and often incorrect/outdated OpenGL wiki site.

But in reality, who cares about DX/OGL. They are the same thing to both developers and end users. Using one over the other will not likely make games any better. They are just a thin API that developers use to access our GPU's.

Porting a game to OpenGL doesn't take much time, developers aren't locked to DX unless you're talking about Xbox (just like developers are locked to OpenGL ES on PS3).

Feel free to game on Linux and use OpenGL then.

If Microsoft is oh so bad towards PC gaming then everyone else must be the devil incarnate.

OP doesn't seem to make a single point relevant to gaming on the PC. Just a statement with zero support.

The one and only thing I use Windows for is games. Every other machine in our house is either Mac OS, iOS, or Android, and it's fantastic.

7 will take the place of XP and will be used for the next 12 years too, unless W9 is geared back to PC.

7 PC games from MS for 2010-12. 1 a year late and 2 2 years late. At this rate Sony will be making more PC games than MS. Then they say they'll change but here we are with Xbox timed exclusive Skyrim DLC.

Maybe because MS is not a game developer and is a publisher? Last time I checked I have about a bajillion games on my computer and I don't even have time get through them all.

Yeah, yeah, and 9/11 was a conspiracy by aliens from outer space.

Like I said, switch to Apple or Linux if you really think MS is out to destroy PC gaming. Monopolies like MS and Intel have always slowed down innovation and progress in PCs and its the big bullet everyone has had to bite since day one. Nonetheless they don't own the PC gaming market! They don't own it! Got that, they don't own PC gaming and other companies like Apple and Sony would give their left nut to jump right in and take their place.

WTF? What's wrong with you?

 I said they basically "abandoned" PC gaming. Abandoned has a different meaning that destroy.

Abandon:
1
a : to give up to the control or influence of another person or agent b : to give up with the intent of never again claiming a right or interest in <abandon property>
2
: to withdraw from often in the face of danger or encroachment <abandon ship>
3
: to withdraw protection, support, or help from <he abandoned his family>

I would really like to hear from people that have been using Windows 8.
Are my concerns unjustified? Is there hope for PC gaming with the coming of Windows 8?

I used Windows 8 consumer preview for about a month and half. If you learn the hot corners it's as usable as XP or Win 7. Metro Apps work fine with a keyboard and mouse and are completely optional. Gaming will be unaffected by Win8. Really, this is much a do about nothing.

And I said go ahead, switch to Linux or Mac and see just how many games you can play. Conspiracy theories are a dime a dozen and I'm fresh out of tinfoil hats.

might be off topic, but how is windows 8 with games as of right now? On my second pc, i connect to steam through a mapped network drive, and play from there. I want to put windows 8 on it, but im scared that its going to ruin something, or just not work and then ill have to go switch back to windows 7.

You keep using that word, but you don't seem to know what it means.

They shut down Aces studio. That's a fact. Can you say fact? A fact is a piece of information presented as having objective reality. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fact Any of this getting through?

They shut down Ensemble Studios, which also made PC games. That is also a fact.

They shut down FASA Studio, which made PC games.

They shut down Digital Anvil which made PC exclusives.

Microsoft converted Lionhead Studios from making PC games to making Xbox games.

To produce games for Xbox, Microsoft will force developers to delay or cancel their PC version. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...nvinced-microsoft-to-let-it-make-alan-wake-pc

Microsoft left the PC Gaming Alliance. That is another fact. Here, check for yourself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_Gaming_Alliance

Microsoft is not interested in games on Windows platform. The reason is very simple - Microsoft takes a cut from every sale on Xbox platform. In fact now that current console generation is severely out of date and there is movement back to PC...
And some gamers even understand that console gaming is not really cheaper than PC. Yeah, the console itself is cheaper, but you still have to pay $60 for a game and get the product that is significantly inferior to the PC version which costs the same amount of money. Plus pricing on PC is much more flexible which makes it even cheaper.
So I would assume that Microsoft's next step would be to sabotage Windows as a power-gaming platform, because with Windows' 8 movement to the tablet which needs games too but more casual type.

I have great hopes for Valve. They ported Steam to MacOS and that made Mac more interesting as a gaming platform. Now they are trying to do the same with Linux. And they have the power to create a unified software platform there and fix one of the greatest problems that prevents major gaming there.
