Blaine is quite right. However - why not just get rid of Windows Messenger? THAT is the real PITA!

Besides, your desired outcome is not logical - what is the point of having Messenger if you can't be notified that you have a message? If that is not important - you don't need that feature to be active.

In that case, why not unlock the taskbar, and drag it down to the bottom. You'll just have a tiny bit of it showing, and then turn off autohide. As far as I know it wont pop up any more.

Tools->Options->Alerts and Sounds. Uncheck the first three boxes.

Unfortunately, this kills your alerts. But you'll still hear the sound events, and incoming IM will still show in your taskbar (except that it's hidden...do'h!) :)

D'oh...I gave you wrong advice. I thought you were talking about any of the alerts from MSN Messenger, but you meant specifically messages from friends who are sending you an IM.

When receiving a new IM, the newly created IM window is minimized by default. As a result, the new taskbar button for this window is active (meaning, it's blinking). When something like this happens on the taskbar, the Windows design is to expose the taskbar when it is in auto-hide mode: this is to inform you that something important is happening. It will occur for any app that is trying to notify you of something that requires your immediate attention.

In other words, there's nothing you can do about this. Sorry.
