1) What's with all the GUIs?

Some things are just easier to do at a command line. There doesn't have to be GUIs for everything, but there should be a good command line structure so that a user doesn't have to go through 15 levels of menu options to get to the one damned thing he needs.

2) Running as admin is stupid!

Whoever thought running as an admin all the time would be a good idea? That persion should never be allowed to breed! Correctly setting up permissions and roles is a relatively easy task. And hell, not everyone needs to be installing the latest rootkit automagically anyhow.

I don't even remember all of my root passwords. 🙂

3) Install files. 😕

What in the hell is that all about? You mean I have to search around the web through a browser to find the tools I want or need? Why not just issue a command to download and install it for me? No buttons to click, no random files spread all over my desktop because I had to download them to install them.

Thankfully most modern OSes can install a lot of programs easily, quickly, and in a working order. Maybe Windows will join their ranks one day. Installer files are so 1990's!

4) No compiler?

This is baffling. How in the hell do I write programs or change the ones I have if I don't have a compiler?

EDIT: Does anyone run their browser or other client side avenues of attack under a different user name through su or sudo to protect their own files incase it does get exploited?

5) Viruses? What kind of decently created Operating System would allow for viruses? Now I need a anti-virus scanner? Can't Microsoft create anything right?

I've been considering it, but haven't tried it yet. Just wondering if anyone else does it.
 
Face the damn facts---microsoft is piss poor at innovating anything----and no one would use windows if everyone else was not even more inept than microsoft. Apple had a huge lead and screwed themselves with trying to be totally proprietory-----OS2 and IBM should have eaten window's lunch---but they were many days late and clueless. Microsoft only excels at making existing hardware work--and they have a defacto monopoly on running the huge base of windows and X86 code.---until Linux or some other OS can make a dent on that--it will be a windows world until the people wise up and use anti-trust laws to bust microsoft into itty bitty pieces.

Meanwhile microsoft has a negative incentive to innovate or serve the public interests.

You fail to give Microsoft credit where credit is due. They singlehandedly have helped create a multi-billion dollar Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware industry! The funny thing is they bought an Anti-Spyware company that their buggy OS helped create.

Hmm, I'm having a Guinness moment here:

Lets make money off of not only the OS - but the problems it helps create as well - brilliant!!!!!!

It there was no MS OS and say just OSX belive me there were be the same promlems with Virus and spyware. I used MS OS's for 12 Years or more and never had a Virus. Using OSX now for othere reasons but miss my PC.

It's hard to say whether that's true or not. One of the reasons that it's so easy to attack Windows is because it's largely a monoculture, with everyone using virtually all of the same software virtually all of the same attack vectors work so attackers get a lot of bang for their buck. This is just a guess, but even now I'd guess that Safari and FF users are split a lot more evenly than IE and FF users on Windows. Of course Apple didn't have the same motivation to kill off their main browser competitor a few years ago either, so it's impossible to say how that would have worked out too.
 
Well, this thread is moot. All you have to do is look at the ratio and market share of Windows to Linux, at least on the end user desktop market.

That command line still bugs me. For detailed troubleshooting, fine, its got a purpose. But I should be able to accomplish day to day tasks without a command line. That means, installing software, configuring hardware, using apps, etc.

Not really, MS has been "grandfathered in" for at least a decade, MS won that market long before Linux even existed.

AFAIK you can. Configuring hardware's a little more iffy because you might have to mess with some kernel modules, but usually that's not necessary.
