Windows startup sound pauses, why?

I just installed a new IBM HD and a clean install of Win98SE. My Windows startup sound pauses about half way through for a couple seconds then finishes playing. If you watch the HD light, it goes off during the pause then comes back on. My old HD did this for a little while, it quit after I installed something but don't remember what. I have a FIC AZ11E and using the onboard sound. All other sounds are fine. This really isn't a big problem, just want to know WHY!!
