Every once in a while i'll lose the START on my start button, and the WINDOWS 98 logo that runs up the side... here's a screen cap of the start button so you know what i'm talking about.

Where's START?

if i reboot, it's fine... but once in a while it'll go missing.

Any ideas?

you have an even bigger problem though, is that aol and netscape icons i see??!!

as far as the start menu problem; maybe if you install different video drivers, not necessarily the newest but the most stable.

That happened to a friend's computer after he installed the latest version of AOL - could have been a coincidince, though. As said above, I installed different video drivers for him, but since I also convinced him to get rid of AOL, I'm not sure which did the trick. I know there are a lot of system conflict problems with AOL 6.0, but I'm not sure it can cause this problem. Maybe someone here knows?

There's a conflict between nvidia's drivers and your soundcard's drivers. Are you overclocking your tnt2? The work around so far is to not to OC your videocard and use the latest drivers for your soundcard. Since ymf7*4 soundcard's drivers are pretty much interchangable, head down to Aopen's site and use their drivers. It's more of an annoyance then anything though soooo...it's up to you how you want to deal with it. Good luck!

I have the exact same problem on my 815E system also loaded with WIN98SE. The "Start" logo vanishes or turns into a bunch of indecipherable sh*t and sometimes mine also creeps up the logo on the side. This only happens sometimes after I move the mouse and the system comes out of screen saver mode. I have also had it happen after I play the 3dMark2000 demo or even a DVD movie, anything that requires the entire screen. The Start button is still completely functional when this happens and a reboot fixes mine also. This is not an AOL problem because I have never had AOL on anything I have ever had. That is definitely not the source of this problem anyway. You can pull up my system rig on the link below and compare it to yours. I can't see anything similar. I am running Nvidia reference driver version 6.31 on my GeForce. Which drivers are you running? I was blaming my problem on my ASUS CUSL2-C mobo as it does have a history of strange problems but now I know this is not it. Lets figure this problem out!!

I would try using the Tweak UI utility. And try the Rebuild Icons option. Might give you som assitance.

You can get the Tweak UI ap from Microsoft's site. Free download.

Rebuild icons is one of the features of Tweak.

I have had the same problem when useing Nortons personal firewall. I got rid of it and never had the probelm again... My guess is that something running in the background is causeing your problem or some software you installed caused the problem. If you installed anything recently remove it and seeif you still have the same problem. Also if that does not work go to: start, run, and type: msconfig and hit enter.
Go to the run tab and remove everything except Explorer, systray, and taskmanager by unchecking it. This is the stuff that starts up when windows starts up so removeing it all will also improve performance. If it solves the problem start systematically rechecking the items until the same problem occurs to narrow it down to which program is causeing your problem. Good Luck :D
