My windows auto update has been weird for a while. Every time the icon appears in the tray and says there is a critical update, I click on it and nothing happens. Then I go to the windows update page via the link in xp, select the updates and they download just fine. Here is my problem. When you go the the update site via the windows update link via the "start" It says that sp2 can only be updated via the icon in the tray that appears when auto update does it seeking thing. How can I get sp2 or make the icon in the tray effective? Thanks.

if you're using xp pro then you'll have to wait till 25th august before sp2 express install is available at the update site.
the update is on there for xp home only atm.

Thanks for the info "b", but I am running xp home. Strange how the link from my tray won't work, but if I go to the upate site via the xp home link in programs it works fine. My problem is this is the first update "sp2" that I have seen that only allows you to update from the icon in the tray that is activated by having auto updates on.

You could download the distro. copy here if you don't want to wait for AU to do it.

note: this one is for all versions of XP and is BIG (~280MB)

edit: This might work I found it when I was looking for the link above.

Good luck!

Weird... my Windows Update icon appeared the other night as well and is "doing nothing." It just says "Downloading Updates 0%" and never finishes.

I have XP Home and the ONLY update I don't have is SP2.

EDIT: It looks as those yours actually finished downloading gypsyman, mine never starts. Is that correct?

No mullzy, mine never even starts. I click on the update icon in the tray. I click to download the sp2 update, it dissappears and nothing happens. I like you have all critical updates except for sp2. There is something else odd. I went into the section where you can set when you want windows autoupdate to check for updates. It can only be set for 1 hour increments. I set mine for the very next hour, click apply and it still does not reset to the hour I want. I have it set for everyday at 3:00am. I changed it to 1:00pm to day to see if I could prompt windows update to appear in my tray, but it always resest itself to 3:00 am which means it will most likely show up in the tray when I log on tomorrow. Then it will do the same dissappearing act when I click on it. I think I will wait till the 25th as bacillus suggests and go directly to the widows update site and update at that time. Let me know it you have find another solution.

Thanks...

After rebooting the AU icon appears in the system tray within 2-3 minutes. It is not *clickable* but mouse-over reveals the pop-up "Downloading updates: 0%". It's been sitting like tha for 3 days now (have rebooted maybe 2-3 times for various reasons). Not really a problem if at some point it decides to actually download and install SP2. :D

Take a look at the c:\windows\windows update.log file. The most recent activity will be at the bottom. What does it say for today?

I booted up my computer, got the Automatic Update icon saying I have SP2 to download. I click it to download, the icon goes away and never comes back.
These are the last few entries on my work Win XP Home laptop:

WU client calls back to download call {F9CD5BBE-7B3F-4515-9660-2FC0627FA766} with code Call progress and error 0

AU received event of 0

Does that help, or do you need any more?

Is there anything from the today's date? So far, it doesn't look like there's anything wrong.

Those were the last 2 entries, both from today (actually, from right before I posted the last message).

Anything in the event logs related to AU? If not, I would give it a few days. The schedule was only changed for XP Pro, not Home, but maybe there are other issues.

Can you point me where to look? I'm a NOOB with where the logs are.

Go to start, run and type eventvwr. Check the application and system logs for things related to WU or AU. Sorry I can't be more specific, since I'm not really sure there will be anything.

Well I checked and my Windows Update Log file hasn't had any new entries since August 12th. I believe the little World/Windows icon started showing up in my system tray no longer than 3-4 days ago (sometime after the 15th). Eventually it will download I guess... not really in a rush.

did you guys ever figure out the solution to this problem? My little icon just popped up today with the "Downloading Updates 0%" issue. Is this spyware or a virus? Adaware didn't pick up on anything?

Thanks for any response.

Download and install SP2 manually. Autoupdate will work correctly from then on.
