Windows Sounds are scratchy, static filled (Vista 64-bit)

In the past 2-3 days, my Windows sounds (X-Fi Platinum, ASUS A8N-E, Vista Ultimate 64-bit w/latest Creative driver) are very tinny/scratch/static filled.

I've checked the connection for the speakers at both the sub-woofer (Bose 2.1 system) and sound card, and everything is fine, as far as I can tell. Sounds through the speakers are great once I log into World of Warcraft, but the quality of normal Windows sounds sucks right now, and it's driving me nuts.

Anyone else experienced this?

Does the audio sound right in other games too? It kind of sounds like something in your case could be producing EMI (but only when the video card isn't being taxed)...

Also, just to cover the simplest possibility, you've checked your volume settings in Windows, right? You don't have a microphone unmuted or anything like that?

I think you can safely rule out that explanation.
