Windows Server backup, Shadow Copy, VM

I'm a bit confused on the best way to configure my backup for a virtual build.
The host is 2012 Standard, VM is 2012 Standard.
I want to backup the VM externally (vhd + configuration from Hyper-V) and internally (mount a drive in Hyper-V and attach it as SCSI device, use it as backup destination inside the VM).
But I would like to use Shadow Copy for Previous Versions, as well (in host and VM).
Out of the box Shadow Copy is enabled on all of the host drives but none of the drives inside of the VM. I'm assuming Windows did that for a reason but I don't know what that reason is.
Should I be ok with Shadow Copy enabled on all of the host drives as well as virtual drives (inside VM)? Is it ok to run Full VSS backup physically and virtually? The last question is a concern because, AFAIK, Hyper-V makes calls to the VSS writer in the VM to get snapshots for backup. Would it be basically marking them off as fully backed up from two sources and cause issues?

TIA
