windows server 2003 windows update not working

here's the error message i get when i try running windows update:

[Error number: 0x80096001]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

i've methods 1-6 on this article, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 but nothing seems to work so far.

here's the error message in windowsupdate.log

any ideas what i can do?

EDIT:

no replies on the hard stuff... why am i not surprised. :/

here's something new i came across. it seems that all the certificates on the server are invalid. at least i'm assuming they're invalid. when i look at the certificate information, i get a "a system-level error occured while verifying trust."

this is true for all the certs. i tried exporting/importing good certs from one machine to the server. i even tried uninstalling the root certs and then reinstalling them, but i'm getting the same error message. it also says that all the certs don't have a valid signature.

now i'm even further confused. i have no clue what caused this issue. the event logs aren't showing anything out of the ordinary either.

find update.log
find windowsupdate.log

delete the two.
create empty files with these names
your machine will reescan the updates again.

If it does not function. wait 3 days, Microsoft is ensuring the WGA efforts will
bring you out of updates for at least 2 weeks before all of the users ask them what is happening, or when they finnaly got a big barrier to updates controled by users.

I found the same problem in one 2003 server, the problems solved one day like a miracle.
The automatic updates still continue to function, Microsoft is ensuring every user
cannot control anymore the updates, to extend WGA efforts.

the problem with the WGA tool is it wont work with a crippled browser because of the certificate problem.

Where do you come up with this crap?

xyyz, this might be a corrupted profile problem. Have you tried logging into this machine as a different user and trying it?

Also for the current user that you have tried it with, check the value of the following registry key:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\AppData.

alright the problem is solved, but i'd like for someone to explain how.

i set up AAA services on the server, and disabling that caused things to work. any reason why AAA hampered the certificate/WU ability?
