I have no idea whats going on. All I did wa restart my computer and now it will not get passed the Windows XP load screen. All it does is keep restarting, gets to the Windows XP screen and restarts again. So I left my computer off for a while, turned it back on and my BIOS instantly came up on the advanced tab with this message:

During your last boot-up your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting. Your system is now working in safe mode. To optimize the system performance and reliability, make sure the CPU speed conforms to the specifications of your CPU

I have never overclocked my machine or done any tweaking?

Any ideas?

Whats the fsb set to in the bios. Should be 200 if you use DDR400/PC3200.

What PSU are you using. What FSB is your cpu...the 2.4 could be 400mhz FSB, 533mhz FSB northwood or prescott or 800Mhz FSB...was your system running normaly for a while before this started happening? Were you running any anti-virus programs? I would suggest running memtest to check your memory.

This is what I did. I ended up loading from my Windows XP Disk, Repairing The partition my OS was loaded on and that fixed it. I dont know what happened but thats what worked. Everything is loading fine now.

Thank you everyone for you help and suggestions!

It sounds like that new windows update that screws everything up. Just boot using last known good config and it should work (but I suppose that's no point coz you already did a repair).

I had exactly the same thing happen to me last weekend on my laptop (Win XP Pro). It would start to boot, get to the windows screen then pause for about 15 seconds and then reboot. I initially though it was a hardware problem which was ok as the laptop is still under warranty. I kept powering off and then restarting and eventually it did start. Once started I did all the usual scans for viruses and worms etc but found none. I finished off by doing a defrag and noticed that the Half Life 2 Steam files would not defrag.

I uninstalled steam and re run the defrag which went ok this time and the laptop has been perfect ever since.

Don?t know if this helps but worth thinking about. Had you loaded any software or undated any software or Windows components immediately prior to this happening?

My experience is that most problems are software related.

I currently have the same problem on my other computer and i screwed it up even more. Instead of doing a repair on that instillation i accedently installed over it somehow. Windows now works fine except I cant get to any of my files. Does anyone know a way for me to access all of my old files?
