Windows registry problem and no sound!

I installed a new comp and I downloaded the latest drivers for the sound blaster live! card I used the downloaded driver as my primary instead of sticking in the cd and installing the sound card. When I restarted the computer a windows registry error came up saying that it encountered some problems so i clicked ok and it restarted. When it booted up to windows it said it did not detect my sound card but it was connected. So i just reinstalled the drivers but that didnt do anything. I tried switching slots and that didnt do much either. It has happened before. Could it be because I am using the downloaded driver. If not, let me know what I can do to help this.

Windows ME
soundcard: sound blaster live
motherboard: Abit BX-1.67M
Ram: 128
pentium 650mhz

Just go into device manager, remove your soundcard from the list of devices, reboot your computer. Windows will detect your sound card. It will try to install the driver, cancel. Install the driver with the cd. You can choose just to install the driver or the whole package from there. You can update to the latest driver on the net after you get it going.
