My box froze up on me while playing a game (?I was running Windows ME ) , so I killed the power,,,,needless to say that messed my stuff up. So I formated the drive and attempted to put Windows 98 SE back on. So I installed it and when it reboots all I get is "Windows Protetion Error, Restart your Computer" it takes me in a big circle over and over again,,,I NEED HELP!!!!!!

If you're overclocking it, set it back to normal clock speed.

Other then that, make sure your windows cd isn't too messed up, if it is borrow one which isn't.

Format the HD, reinstall windows.

Yeah i got that windows protection error when I was overclocking a celeron for a friend, I installed windows at default speed but when I attempted to run it oc'ed. (celeron 533@ 800) I had problems. These problems went away after I upped the core voltage to 1.85 and replaced the thermal tape with arctic silver. I imagine thats your problem, either heat or not enough juice... probably both.

The first & last time I had Windows protection error was when I discovered I had a CPU become faulty, yours sounds like what the other Members have said overclocking too far,if you still get problems at normal speed with a clean install then you probably have a faulty CPU.

Windows Protection Errors are usually RAM related.... turn down your FSB.

If you aren't overclocking, then it is definitely the RAM.

Try moving the sticks around, and removing them and/or adding them one by one to determine which stick is the problem.

Or run a scan for viruses and do a registry clean.

I don't know if it's always RAM...

Most of my Windows Protection Error were caused by other PCI devices or other hardware in general...

It's usually RAM related if you get WPE during operation within Windows... when you get it during bootup load, then its driver/hardware conflict.

If your system worked fine with the current RAM before the format, then Windows is probably having fits with one of the hardwares.

Use the clear cmos jumper on your motherboard to clear the cmos. When everything's reset, set defaults in BIOS, don't overclock and let Windows load.

If you still have problems, take all PCI/ISA stuff out, leave video in, clear CMOS again and let Windows load. It "should" load without problems.

After that, just add one card, reboot, add another, reboot, so on and so on...

There was a timing bug with the K6 family cpus (350+ I think) and Win 95 that caused the protection error. It's not always ram.
