Hey,

My friends computer is now having a windows protection error. Nothing was installed since the last time it was used, except one codes to watch an asf video we had on cd. We restarted, and this problem started.

"Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."

Compaq
Clean install Win98SE
Celeron 433
96 megs RAM
ATI something
A Sound Card
A Hard Drive

how do you uninstall the codec? Nothing is wrong with the computer whenever we start into safe mode, so I don't know whats wrong with it. Something software related?

As CRV said try uninstall the offending prog.

It sound like your vid prog is trying to run in Real Mode, but the VxD & DLL is not compatible. Sometime a prog demand Real Mode that run in the Conventional Memory Block where it uses the same memory block as Windows and cause a General Protection Error.

...Sometime uninstall the prog is not enough to cure the problem. If the uninstall don't do it, then you have to restore the Registry by running SCANREG/RESTORE at dos promt, and WSCANREG/RESTORE in Windows.

no why should he?

I must however admit that Microsoft keeps WAAAAAAAAY too many extremely useful things in Windows a secret.....

Maybe he had some free time and decided to help out a little
cause I wouldn't know how to solve a problem like that
I would think it hardrive conflicting devices
