Windows Protection Error (NEED QUICK RESPONSE)

Hey,
My firends computer is running ME 🙁 and he called and told me that he recieved the dreaded Windows Protection error. I cant think of anyway to fix it. He wants to avoid reinstalling at all costs. Is there anything he can do?

He is not very good with computers and only knows the basics so i guided him to do the simple things. None of these worked. btw. We tried System Restore...which froze... We tried Selective Startup... didn't work... And he cant access internet to get newer drivers... and CD support is disabled in safe mode so he cant even backup files. Any suggestions
Thx,
-Kevin

Can try to go to safe mode and changed the ide driver to standard ide controller. That might resolve the NIC problem in normal mode until the correct motherboard driver is reinstalled to correct the corrputed file(s).

He can get into safe mode but he cant get into normal mode. When in safe mode internet and CD support is gone for some reason. He doens't do any updating or anything so how could the mainboard drivers be corrupted. Thanks for the input and ill try that tho.. Still open fgor suggestions.
-Kevin
