windows problem on boot

my comp was running slow so i restarted. i have an up to date norton antivirus and i use spy bot....the task bar won't show up when i start windows...i tried restoring...ive even tried replacing explorer.exe....any suggestions or help? ive even went into msconfig and did a clean boot..any help would greatly be appreciated as it is my work computer. the only think i can access is control+alt+del to get into windows task manager...ive ever tried running explorer from there...doesn't work
 
Would you be able to take out the hard drive and put it into a different computer as a slave, to do an antivirus/antispyware scan without the bugs being able to fight back or hide themselves? Based on my recent de-virusing/de-spywareing of my little sister's computer, I'd try a 30-day trial of Kaspersky Antivirus Personal from http://www.kaspersky.com/trials because it ended up finding things that Norton 2005 was missing. Set the detection levels to Maximum, and in the Updater part, have it use "extended" databases.

Also use the Microsoft AntiSpyware beta, it is pretty good stuff.

What malware, if any, did they detect when you scanned? Remember some names?

Anyway, once you're clear of malware, try a repair-install of Windows. Start Windows Setup from CD-ROM. At the first screen where you're given the option to repair or install, choose "install." It'll proceed a little bit, you accept the EULA, and then it looks at the hard drive. Aim it at the C:\ partition as the installation location. It should see the C:\WINDOWS directory and offer to repair that Windows installation, and now you choose Repair. It'll retain your programs and data files.

Note that this will take away any security patches and service packs that aren't included on your Windows CD itself. So if your Windows CD is WinXP SP1 or SP0, it would be smart to keep the computer isolated from networks (unplug cable, turn off wireless) until you have the Windows Internet Connection Firewall enabled (see Windows Help if you don't know just where to turn that on, it's the same thing as Windows Firewall in SP2 but harder to find). Once it's got its firewall up, head to Windows Update a few times, and Office Update as well. You might also try Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, which you can get from yonder.
 
maybe a corrupt profile. can you log on w/ a different profile. If so download the user profile hive cleanup service from microsoft. If that doesn't work you'll need create a new profile, if it is indeed a profile issue. Are there any profile errors in the event viewer? Do you notice the lsass.exe service hogging memory?
