1. unplug everything except the video, the mobo cpu, the PSU the RAM, and the primary HD/cdrom.

2. run memtest.

3, if nothing is found plug that HD into another pc and run some diag software that can tell if it is exhibiting I/O errors or not, like Ontrack software or something. Also check for hardware platter issues like bad secotrs

You may be able to get atot on a mac.....but you'll never get respect.
you better take that back! several respected ATOT'ers have macs and plenty of respect. the nice thing about a mac, it just works. now if you want, you can also get XP to run on it for the games and or apps. it is now more of a hardware platform then OS X.

BTW, my windows and all my PC's work flawlessly.

1) what the hell is pebkac?

2) good for you, for a while my pc worked flawlessly also, now it runs like crap, which means i'll at LEAST have to reformat the OS to get it working again. I don't have the time, energy, or the intrest to go through all of that crap anymore.

3) I do my gaming on my 360 so my high end pc is a little redundant right now.

4) I consider myself very adept at using a computer, I can fix the problems with a WinTel box (or the WinMD box), i just don't want have to deal with the same crap over and over again.

1. Problem exists between keyboard and chair

2. I have never had to reformat a computer. That is entirely user error, you are simply not experienced enough to understand this. I have seen people like you crash Linux, so don't think you are safe on another computer.

3. And dropping $600 on a slower computer is retarded.

4. Refer to #1 and #2

1)har har

2) Well Guru Malak, grand imperial wizard of computer usuage, please share with me, as a member of the unwashed masses, what it is that you do with a computer that has kept the same copy of windows xp running smoothly since 2001. Please, ever do share a crumb of your godly wisdom so that I shall one day endeavor to have a sliver, nay, a speck of the computer knowledge present in your infinite universal expereince in keeping windows xp running for as long as the cosmos have existed. Please share with me the user error of my ways so i may repent! Let me cast away the shackles of sin and join in your glorious light Malak. Only you can save me Malak, only you can show me the way.

3)I surf the web, I watch DVDs, thats about all I do on my PC.

I've been a PC guy forever. I never owned a mac and only use them regularly at work.

That's akin to a hard drive crashing and dying.

Mac's use hard drives to. They also die. Hardware problems are going to occur no matter what software you are running. Linux, Windows, DOS, MacOS, Unix, BeOS, whatever.

It's good stuff. have you had experience with linux? If so, suse gets kind of annoying since they put so much stuff in the GUI.

Hoenstly, sometimes you get so used to the CLI that typing

dhcp cd eth0 is so much faster than clickign a few dialog boxes.

Well than what do you want?

From what I've seen, your obviously incompetent at fixing a Windows install. All you are going to get is flames here. And for the first time, I'd say rightly so. Most of these guys know their stuff.

You COMPLETLY missed the point. I CAN fix the problem, i'm just SICK of constantly having to BABY my WINDOWS installs woth tons of virus scans, spyware scans, crashes fixes, driver fixes, software that leaves itself behind when uninstalled, and other crap like that. It's not a matter of technical know how, it's a matter of wanting a simple computer that won't cause m to spend an afternoon a week troubleshooting of scanning.

Yes, Mechanincal faliures happen and a Seagate Hard Drive is a Seagate Hard Drive regardless of it is in a PC of a Mac. I'm not as annoyed at the hardware side as I am at the Os.,

None of the rest of us 'baby' our XP installs and they run fine

My gf's rig had XP installed after she bought it in 2003, and it's still working fine for her.

I think you are the one who is missing the point. You have problems? Why should we care? If you really want help just ask, we'll be glad to. Man up and fix them, or buy a mac if you so wish. Your thread title is a blatant ignorant troll.

Uh why not just continue using Linux? If that works, you don't need it for games, load VLC on and you got full video player, and gaim for instant messaging, and firefox of course. If you don't need much Linux should have u covered?

Windows XP, can be stable, just use firefox, don't download spyware, and don't use symantec products and you shouldn't have problems? I've followed that, and havn't ever reformatted due to a OS problem since I switched to Win2k. Maybe you have a hardware/driver problem, does the computer still boot into safe mode?

Anyways that said I also have a mac mini and they're not really problem free, you can run into problems on them like a PC, they do lock up, they just get stuck at the annoying color wheel instead of a bsod lol. The advantage of a mac is all the hardware is controlled by them, it should work pretty reliably because of that, and they are not going to be compatible with most viruses/spyware. The mac it just works thing depends on what you're using it for of course :), mac minis won't just work with the latest games :)

decisions is up to you but windows generally needs help in getting messed up, doesn't do it on it's own like windows 95.

You are the only one having this problem. What kind of hardware do you have? You realize those $300 GQ PC from Fry's aren't going to last that long right?

Spyware and virus, there are ways to protect yourself but even Mac has virus and spyware too. There is no such thing as complete security and you need to learn what to do to protect any computer, windows or mac.

If you like mac, just buy it, but I don't think you can convince anyone that Windows 2000 and XP crash all the time, because we use it 247 and it is reliable. Maybe not scalable or nice looking, but reliable, yes.
