Windows partition and dwindling room

I have windows installed on a 6gb partition, and recently after downloading several updates, my partition has gone form having nearly a gig and a half free to 200 mb. I'm guessing that windows stores the oringal patches even after they have been installed which could be the answer to my storage problem. I was wondering if this is a correct assumption, and if so, is it safe to delete the extra, oringal patch and where would they be stored?

In the windows folder, you will see some dir starting with $NTUninstallKBxxxxxxxxx where the x is the patch you installed.
I think it is safe to delete them. Just put them in the recycle bin for now. Wait a few days, then empty the bin.
