windows NT network, can DNS names be used instead of netbios names?

In most instances, yes.

In fact, ADS works primarily on DNS - I don't think you can even set it up without it if I understand correctly. I've never put one up, but I've done the comm. for quite a few and the common denominator seems to be centered around correct DNS configuration.

windows 2000 active directory, yes i know needs DNS. but for a pure NT domain, can i use dns style names, rather than netbios names. that was my question.
 
I've been led to believe that if you have SP6a, you can run NT4 DNS only. That would be one thing to check for all the NT workstations...
