Windows not detecting second IDE drive

Alright, I just installed a second IDE drive- an IBM 60GXP 7200RPM 40gig

Now I have two drives in there- the first one being a Quantum Fireball AS 30gig

I hooked up the cables, and I set the Quantum to Master and the IBM to slave (I think, it was pretty complicated, but I just have two jumpers side by side so I think that is right.

Now when I boot into windows, it just recognizses C: which is the Quantum and not D: which should be the IBM

What am I missing here? I enabled both IDE channels, etc... I don't see any settings in the BIOS that relate to it, do I have to config my ultra 100 bios? It does show the IBM when I start up

Thanks

1)Did you autodetect the HD in your bios and make sure the HD is listed there?

2) Are you sure you got the jumpers right? There should be a little diagram on the drive telling you how to set them. If not, then check the web site.

3) You're running both HD's off the same IDE channel and the same cable? If you have them in 2 different channels with 2 cables, then maybe they should both be set to master (depending on if you have other IDE devices).

I am running them off of separte IDE channels and cables. Is this bad? Which would you recommend?

I'll try both I guess, but would it slow it down to have two ATA100's on the same cable?

And does master and slave not apply when running off two separate channels? becuase I'm not sure which is what

and I don't think it autodetects it in the BIOS, it doesn't my quantum drive, it only does when booting up the ATA100 BIOS it shows both HD's

First, make sure that your motherboard can support the size of the drive, if not, update your bios. Then make sure you partition and format your drive, windows will not see the drive until it is partitioned. Once it is partitioned, windows will see the drive but will not be able to use the drive until it is formatted.

ahh, ok, so I need to fdisk it?

And also, a question about fdisk

When it asks me whether I want to use the Harddrive, I've tried hitting no, then I set a primary partition, and a secondary DOS partition. Now it gives the primary partition a letter, but not the secondary DOS partition, so I can't format it or anything.

Hows fdisk work? and how do I assign letters to both? What are logical drives, do I need a logical drive for my secondary
