Windows *non-Microsoft* patch management

I've been looking for an application which can help with the deployment of non-Microsoft patches/updates. We have WSUS for MS stuff, can't afford SCCM.

Requirements:

  • Deploy patches for Mozilla, Adobe & other 3rd party software.
  • Use .exe files.
  • Centrally configurable.
  • Open source or low cost - not much budget for this.

Nice but not necessary:

  • Report installed versions.

What you should be doing in this scenario is virtualizing all of these applications and having users run them from a central source. Thinapp is very good at this, easy to use and implement.

Shavlik for that small amount of computers couldn't possibly be that expensive, could it?

Otherwise, I think you're probably stuck scripting the patches as I don't know a free or cheap product off the top of my head that is comparable to Shavlik and supports the wide range of products that it does. At one time, Shavlik did offer a free version of NetChk for 50 computers or under, but I believe that has been discontinued for quite some time.

i'm starting to test lumension patch management but i'm not sure how much it costs. i hear it's pretty good!
