Windows networking parameter

Please help me out here.

I can't remember what the name of the parameter is or where exactly it is located in Windows networking properties but there is some parameter/method which can be used/set to that a wired and wireless connection can NOT be established on a workstation at the same time.

Can anyone give me a hint as to the name of the parameter that I am trying to think of ?

Yes, that is exactly what I was looking for.

Am I correct, according to what I read on the link, that if I make the metric setting for the WIRE 10 and the metric setting for the WIRELESS to 20, then it will default to the WIRED connection if both are present, i.e. it will default to whichever is assigned to lowest number ?

I believe a laptop would direct traffic through the wired connection by default, since it's faster. (probably has some default metric built-in similar to those for spanning-tree)

What I'd like to do is DISABLE or lock down wireless when the laptop is docked to wired connection for security reason.
We've had users on our corporate wired network, and non-corporate wifi at the same time, which I think is a big security risk.

Anyone know how to do it?

The problem that we have at the accounting firm that I work at, is that every once in a while one of the accountants will come to me and say that they are getting a warning message saying that more than one computer is trying to use the same IP address on the network at the same time.

My first question to them is always, are you connected via a wire and if so, is your wireless disabled and invariably their say hmmmmmmmm, I don't think it is.

But my real question is, why does our IT people not set these metric settings up so as to make this problem impossible to occur ???

That network has other problems not related to having the wired and wireless enabled at the same time (which is never a good idea, but you shouldn't be getting that message even if they are).

That network has other problems not related to having the wired and wireless enabled at the same time (which is never a good idea, but you shouldn't be getting that message even if they are).

Any idea as to what these "other problems" might be ?
