Good day.

Our network has about 15 computers. All run various versions of Windows. Workstations are WinNT, Win98, or WinME and two servers are WinNT. The fella that had this job before me put the webserver on a seperate domain to seperate it more from the file sharing computers. So all of the workstations are on the same domain as the file server, and the web server is on a domain all by itself. All computers can get to the file server fine because they're on te same domain. However, when someone tries to get at files on the webserver on the other domain it is very spotty. My workstation used to be able to access the second domain fine. I just recently had to reformat it and decided to put WinME on it instead of the WinNT that it had before. The computer name, IP, etc. all stayed the same. Now I cannot access the second domain. My computer recognizes that it is there, but will not give me a computer listing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

I would get rid of windows me. Its not really ment for use on a domain. However you can do it. Make sure you use the same username and password to logon to the windows me box as you do on the domain. Also in your nic properties make sure you have Client for Microsoft Networks installed. In the properties Client for Microsoft Networks you need to add your domain name and check off log on to a NT Domain. Then your should be able to get to the NT Servers shares.

But I would recommend putting winnt, windows 2000 pro, or windows xp pro on your machine. Anything but M :). Even 98 would be better.

this is probably your issue, it also applies to shares on the server, windows me submits your ID as the current user logged onto the PC, even if you manually put in the
user id and password when prompted it wont work.

Check to see if wins is running on either/both servers. If they are 2000 servers dns must be running or they are not functional AD servers. The guy who set this mess up didn't know squat. If not already setup create a trust between the 2 domains so user administration is easier. Another thing to check is this. On a 9X pc to go start, run, type in winipcfg. If your wins is set to broadcast change it to hybrid. This can be done by editing the registry. Check microsoft's site or run a google search.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've fiddled with it a bit more and can now get to the files on the webserver very slowly. I'm still not satisified with it though. I think I'm just going to try and move the webserver over to the same domain with all the other computers. As far as I can tell, all I'll need to change is the computer's domain and then demote it from being a primary. Is it really this easy or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Truthfully, trash that windows ME. It's the most unstable version of windows. Run 2k or xp and it will solve a lot of the problems.
