im curious what tomtom app does on your phone. is it gps stuff? may sound dumb to ask, but im new to winmo and am asking the same kinds of questions a lot.
Basically yeah, GPS.
the phone needs to have a GPS radio in it though.
Like the Samsung Omnia I just picked up, the Verizon CDMA version. Sadly, Verizon was a bitch about GPS for a long time, requiring the use of their monthly subscription product or nothing. They are starting to allow certain models to use the GPS for whatever apps the user wants, and sometime between now and summer Verizon will release an official firmware/ROM that has GPS unlocked.
One was recently released though, an unofficial, beta of sorts, leaked ROM that has GPS unlocked. I just recently flashed that, and a second ROM over top that has the M2D/TouchFlow2D UI built in. Wow, very impressive and I'm sticking to this. Tried a few other UI apps, like SPB Mobile Shell and PointUI... didn't like them. This takes the cake. Having an HTC Diamond or similar with the official TouchFlow 3D UI from HTC would be amazing I'd imagine, but due to some issues, when one takes the serious effort to get it to even run on the Omnia, it runs way too slow to even be suggested.
I tried out Google Maps today with GPS, and was able to get a lock, under cloud/rain cover, very quick, even without aGPS (assisted, uses cell towers for initial lock, then regular GPS satellites). And it tracked me quite nice, but I might look into TomTom or Garmin so I can get voice prompts for turn by turn guidance. When I need to use GPS, I don't want to be looking down at a small screen, would rather just have printed google maps or exit numbers instead of that route. But I think I'll stick take the Google Maps GPS/My Location stuff if the price of entry for the other GPS apps is too high. Haven't even looked into that yet.
