My father has a computer setup in his store front with the monitor displayed in the window running a slide show of pictures form past jobs, this runs 24/7. Today he called me saying there was an error on the screen. So I go down, turn on the computer and the computer stops in the middle of post with an error saying the CPU fan is not working and to shut down to prevent it from over heating.
This is an old HP P3, so the CPU fan is actually a standard 80mm case fan with a special adapter, so replaing it was easy and fast. Unfortunately the original fan has a 3-pin connector that plugs into the mobo, the new fan is a 4-pin that goes in the PSU, so I had to disable the onboard CPU fan monitoring system so that the error would not come back.
Once I got everything ready, I boot the system up, and right after post before windows starts loading I get an error saying that windows can not start because it is missing a file in the c:/windows/system32 dir, I dont remember hte exact file name. Im going back down there later tonight with my windows cd to repair this.
Anyways, how does something like this happen? The computer was working fine until the CPU fan failed and the computer automatically shut down, now once the fan is working I get this error. How and why does this happen?
***Update***
So I went back down there with my winxp install cd and ran the setup wizard by booting form the cd. I encountered error #4 "setup can not find file setupdd.exe" and also error code #7, which is i think the same thing. I dont get it, this thing was perfectly fine this morning, now all this.
also, the missing file in windows, is c:/windows/system32/drivers/pci.sys
I pulled out all the pci cards and im running off just the mobo and integrated video card now and still having prblems. Any ideas? Im going back again later with my laptop and BartPE to load up a virtual windows and see what i can do. If I have to, ill just save the pictures on the computer and try loading up linux.
