windows messenger in XP... GO AWAY

Is there a way to disable the starting of windows messenger every time i start outlook express? I can always install office on this PC, but I really prefer to just use outlook express. I have unchecked the box in outlook express options that says "automatically log on to windows messager," but this just stops it from logging in.... it still opens every time I open outlook.

I really dont need suggestions like "use regular outlook" or "just keep it open all the time"... am I missing an option somewhere? or is there a registry key associated with this?

TIA

Even better, open up sysoc.inf in a text editor and remove all references to "hide". Then you'll be able to uninstall messenger from the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel.

I had un-installed messenger using the sysoc.inf change. After downloading the critical fix for messenger 4.6, Windows re-installed messenger.

Now, I can't un-install it from add/remove Windows components, and there's no hide text in the sysoc.inf file. Damn you, Microsoft!

Hmmm...That's odd, Messenger never opens for me when I open OE. Try this: Open windows messenger, open "tools" menu, go down and click "otions". Under the prefferences tab, uncheck "Run this program when widows starts", click OK and see if that works..

I'd listen to GonzoDaGr8. That's what I did and it works fine. Easy to do and you don't screw with the registry or the policy editor...

Yeah, the second one worked for me as well. I hadn't looked at his links, thinking they were only the policy editor and sysoc edit.
