windows media player XP won't play anything!

i had been using win2000 and watching a ton of stuff off of morpheus (for example, i downloaded episodes of shows and music videos). with the media player in 2000 they all worked fine, but WMP XP won't play any of it! it gives a codec download error and only plays sound. is there a way to fix this, or is there another program that plays video clips, avi's, etc well? i have all the updates for WMP and i have not been able to find a program to view video that works properly in windows xp. can anyone help me??!
