Windows Media Player won't play .avi ...

Hi. I'm having problems playing .avi files in Media Player (its the latest version of Media Player before WMP 7).
It downloads the codecs but I keep getting the msg. 'Unable to find decompressor ' or something like that.
Does anyone know what I should do?
I have no problems playing .mpg or .mpeg files. TIA

Where did you get the avi's/ what is the foucc code for them? Try doom9.net, and download divx 3.11 if you haven't if you don't want to wait for a proper answer.

I just d/l the .avis off the net or in ng's.. regular .avis.

right click, properties... second tab.

tell us the codec, audio and video.

probably divx.
