Windows media player problems

Hi Im having a problem with using windows media player suddenly. Since today it will not play video anymore. If I load up a movie or a clip of some sort, it will load up windows media player, open up the file, show the length of the clip etc.. but wont play the file. I have not installed any new programs previous to the problem, but afterwards I tried to reinstall windows media player (now currently 7.1) and installed divx 5.0 none of which have solved the problem. I did do a windows update which I think may have installed a new video driver? but would that have anything to do with it? Im not realyl sure what is going on or how to handle it anymore and would appreciate advice and suggestions.

I would start by removing Media Player 7.1 and divx 5.0. Unless there's something special about 7.1, it's a waste of resources on your pc. I believe it's version 6.4 that you want. Hopefully removing the 7.1 will remove any related software (codecs). In other words, start back at the basics, just the 6.4 version.

After you get it running then try adding the divx 5.0.

if it is divx you are trying to play, it is always kinda finniky, I like to keep several players on hand, wmp 6.1, realplayer (last resort) sasami2k,bsplayer, and a few others, this way I will always be able to play the file (if it is playable)
