windows media player problem

Since last night, whenever I play a wmv file in WMP10, the actual video pops up in another window (pic at end of post). I've found that going to tools>options>performace>advanced and taking off 'use high quality mode' fixes this, but it leaves some of my videos looking darker for some reason. I've played numerous wmv beforehand with high quality mode in WMP10 with no problems until last night, and no one has fiddled around with the settings. Anyone, have any idea what could've caused this or how to fix it?

I had this happen to me too (only in XP64 though). The window says ActiveMovie Window? What OS and SP? First try rebooting. If it persists, your VMR9 mixer is probably screwed if you're using XP32 so reinstall DirectX and Windows Media Player. If XP64, it could just be because XP64 is beta.

Edit: Actually, it only happens in the WM codec for me. Just a simple reinstall of WMP should fix it.

I know the precise problem though: the VMR9WindowlessControl interface can't be obtained. How to fix it? Free memory? Reinstall DirectX? I don't know. I am sure it's not a hardware problem.

Edit2: Hmm I can't reproduce it any more with any file. Try rebooting?

Yep, ActiveMovie Window is what it says. I have Windows XP Home Edition with SP1, tried rebooting & uninstalling then reinstalling WMP to no avail. I'll try reinstalling DirectX soon. Thanks for your help, hopefully it works.

PS. Sorry for the late reply, still on dial up, so I'm not on everyday.

I haven't seen it on my system since. I saw it with a WM9Screen codec, but that's it so far. I think the reboot fixed it but I don't have that problem-causing video anymore.

Damn, reinstalling DirectX didn't fix it. If it is a codec issue, do you think downloading and installing the K-Lite Codec Pack could be worth a shot? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to codecs, so I have no idea if this would make any difference.

Thanks, downloading now.

EDIT: Hmm, didn't seem to make a difference. Is there anything I'm meant to do other than just installing it, like messing around with the options or something?

Reformatting my harddrive would probably fix it, but I'm not sure I feel like going to all that trouble over such a small inconvenience.

This most likely has nothing to do with it, but just a few days earlier I did install DivX 6, do you think that might've done something? I don't think I've installed anything else recently, except for Adobe Reader 7.
