Man, I just want a barebones player. No crap, no colors, no frills. Just play the damned media file that I gave you. The smaller the better.

Personally I prefer QCD over WinAMP or WMP X.X. It supports all the music formats WinAMP does, supports the WinAMP plugins and actually has a better interface than WinAMP. The reason why is that the interface is completely skinable where you can completely change the layout. Unlike WinAMP (least the versions I've seen, it may have changed) where all you can do is change the colors/pictures but you are still stuck with that rectangle.

But I've probably just commited blasphemy on this board by dissing WinAMP. Oh well.

Well I'll check out Winamp again when 3 goes release instead of beta.

which will happen about the same time duke nukem forever will be released :p

btw, I tested qcd, and it seems nice, just it seems to big, I realy like how compact winamp can be and I couldnt find any skin for qcd that matched winamp's small size.

Well, I often dont know exactly what I want to hear. When you have 40-60 gigs of MP3's you often have not heard many songs. The beauty of having that much music is constantly discovering new artists or rediscovering old artists that I have forgetton about.

And how will it handle my 20GBs of self-ripped mp3s without categorization or id3 tags? Does it mean I have to rip a few hundred CDs again, and for the more rare CDs (not in mp3 databases on the Internet) fill out all the info myself? If I listen to Therion's Theli (category Gothic Metal, but with 200+bpm on the first song), and select 'more from same genre', do I get fast songs, slow Gothic Metal, or all of Therions songs (loads of variation)? Would mean I'd have to select the songs manually anyway probably? Or make subgenres myself and set them manually for every song? If I listen to Gothic Metal I often want several classical pieces in there too, as those can fit the same genre nicely when played hard... can those have multiple genres?

The default "mini" skin gets pretty small. Maybe not as small as WinAMPs, but I also find it more readable. Anyway, I use a slightly larger, rectangle skin, but I have the alpha-transparency plugin. So that helps get rid of it being slightly larger. I'd tell you which skin exactly, but thats at home and I don't use my work computer for listening to music (RioVolt soon to be replaced with Nomad 3 is for that).

What does QCD stand for? It says Quintessential Player on the site. Is it Quintessential Compact Disc?

Ok, so I've been out of the country for 6 weeks, and I missed out on some of the latest news. When I return to my LAN connection at Georgia Tech in a week or so, what all should I download? I am running SP2 on Win2K at the moment. Is SP3 now available? IS WMP9 included in SP3? Did I hear that SP1 is now out for WinXP? Does that include WMP9? I know need to download the latest Catalyst drivers for my Radeon 7500. What about for my SB Audigy? Any new drivers for it? Is there a new version of QuickTime out? New version of ZoneAlarm? New version of Counter-Strike/Day-of-Defeat? I have the feeling I'll be doing a lot of updating!

I dont know, not many of my MP3's are self ripped or without ID3 tags. :)

As for your other question, you could set it to any of the following attributes:

Album
Artist
Bit Rate
Comment
Composer
Date Added
Date Modified
Genre
Kind
Last Played
My Rating
Play Count
Sample Rate
Size
Song Name
Time
Track #
Year

I'm not sure why a windows media player thread turned into a debate about smart playlists, all I asked was if WMP has (had?) something similar. =)

QCD started out as a CD only player, thus Quintessential CD. I used it years ago (98 or so) because at the time WinAMP had the most horrible support for audio CD's (like having to go to CDDB every time you put a CD in, instead of storing it locally). As time went on, QCD went on to support more audio formats. But the name never got changed.

If you download the version 1.xx, thats the original QCD. Version 2 was absolutely horrible and thus not even downloadable from that site. Version 3 is quite nice.

Welcome back GT :D

Summary:

WinXP SP1 = bad for pirates, not out yet (coming this fall)
Win2k SP3 = Released
WMP9 = Avaliable for download Sept 4
No new drivers for Audigy
There are new drivers for the Radeon 7500 (released Aug 1)
Dunno what version of QT you have, but 6 is the latest.

Winamp 2.75 sucks on my WinXP box (PIII 1.2 tualatin, 512 mb ram). I can have no other apps running and it will just randomly skip (sounds like a scratched CD) during MP3 plaback. Pisses me off!

What is 'mathmatically lossless' and how does that differ from just plan ol' lossless?

Have you tried going to the help forums on winamp.com, because there were a some problems with WinXP. I had problems with my sbLive, and I found the fix on the site. (Also runningXP)

Check it out, there's probably a fix.

I'm running an Audigy, but I'll check it out. Thanks.

You folks crack me up!. I've used Winamp, QCD. I've purchased Music Match Jukebox which now resides on my daughters' computer-she likes it.
Media Jukebox is the one I consider the BEST! I bought that, too and I use it for everything.

Windows Media Player has ALWAYS annoyed me (I could only tolerate 6.0 and earlier)!

I started this thread to let everyone know that "Corona" is GREAT- my opinion!
You can still think your kids are the cutest on the planet!-most of us know better!

This is a gigantic step up from the mediocre media players that Microsoft has imposed upon us in the past.

I suggest some of you overly opinionated critics try to find the leaked version and try it- it would be a breath of fresh air to hear from what "you know" instead of from what "you think you know".

In the mean time : Remember this- Each one of you is better (i.e.:smarter) than everyone else! Now all you have to do is make it convincing! Go tear it up!:D

BTW- as with the previous Windows Media Players, WMP9 cannot be uninstalled. This will change when WinXP SP1 is released. I believe the option to uninstall is already a part of the Win2k SP3 but ...I haven't tried it out on 2000 yet!

Awesome, thanks man! I knew there was some value to reading all the way through this post! Almost tossed the laptop across the room a few times when this started happening. :-D

Thank you. This is why Winamp is so popular. It's very small and very fast. If you want to add bells and whistles to it, you can do that too, but they're not forced on you. MS has to learn that before Media Player gets any more popular.

Does WMP9 get slapped around by the likes of programs such as: powerDVD XP, ZoomPlayer, Divx's The Player, and probably every other video program out there?

Lucky: I'd love to see your 60GB of mp3s, how they are organized and what you possibly fill up 60GB with :). Curiousity for the most part. I knew a kid in college who had 10 GB of mp3s. Everything was unsorted and most of it was complete trash music. If you have 6x what he had, I am completely scared of what your mp3 directory must look like.

Uhm, I've used all-in-one type applications before (SonicFoundrys Jukebox) but it has one major problem. It is friggin huge. I prefer small, dedicated programs that do one and one thing really good. Rather than one thing that does everything mediocre. (This is typically the difference between the *nix world and Windows).

So I use EAC to rip, LAME to encode, QCD to play, MP3 Collectorz to maintain my collection rather than have a single piece of software do it. Why? Because these programs do what they do better.

And anyway, you are telling everyone to go hunt for an illegal version of WMP. A leaked version is not legal. Its been stolen. Yeah, MS will give it out for free later, but that doesn't make it legal now.
