Windows Media Player 11 no longer installable on MCE2005?

I recently purchased a new hard drive and loaded good old Windows MCE 2005. I've installed windows media player 11 a number of times (after the handful of reinstalls I've done over the years) and was shocked to discover that sometime this week, Microsoft seems to have changed their policy on it.
Less than a week ago, I could install a media center roll-up patch of some sort, then media player 11. Now, the rollup is unavailable and the message for windows media player 11 has changed from "must have rollup installed" to "must have MCE 2005 installed".
Anyone else run into this problem?
I'd have purchased MS Vista Ultimate by now, if not for the fact that it's about $100 too expensive. (Ubuntu works pretty damn well, and it's free... I can see paying maybe $50 bucks for an OS... not $200).
Sigh. I R teh sad nao.

yeah, I discovered weirdness during my own research, nuked the install, redid it and talked to someone in India for the second time in a period of 3 hours <.<;
I just made sure to install the rollup and media player ASAP this go round.

I don't know how Microsoft could have allowed MCE to become such a clusterf-ck. Just fold MCE 2002, 2004, and 2005 into one code tree for crying out loud and release updates that apply to them all. I don't even think Microsoft knows what the f-ck it has done with MCE, anymore.

Imagine having Windows XP 2002, 2004, 2005, update rollup 2 for XP 2002 and 2005 but not for 2004, Service Pack 2 for 2002 and 2004 but 2005 needs its own special Service Pack 2, must install NET Framework in a certain order for 2005 but a different order for 2004 and 2002. What the hell was the MCE team smoking in Redmond?

God help an average user whose MCE install goes to hell after installing some update and tries to sort through that f-cking mess on his own.

Shortly after MS gets top dollar for its new shiny. It starts working on it new shiny to sell you. MS has never been know for it long term support IMHO.
