Windows Media Center video playback issue

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (service pack 1) 64bit
Video Card: Geforce GTX 560 Ti (current driver 8.17.12.7533)

Issue: If I open up Windows Media Center, browse to Movies, and then play a movie, it says something to the effect "files needed to display video are not installed" (both AVI and MP4s, which were playing just fine before).

But if I close WMC, and right click a video file, and say "open with WMC", it will play the video.

I did just install Handbreak this morning, and wondering if some default codec settings have changed that are not loading anymore with WMC; but I don't know how to change that (if its even the issue).

Any ideas?

have you done a (CHKDSK) for errors.

I installed this:

And it fixed my problem. And solved some others that were annoying me as well. Whats strange is, I know these codecs were installed; I'm guessing the installer here also associates WMC as the primary program for them.

well thats what it did.it repaired all codec and remove the bad one. Glad it all worked out.
