Windows ME....What do you think?

I have heard a lot of hate-comments about Windows ME.
What do all you other AnAndTechers think?
Why it so terrible?

It's not so bad that I'm ready to shell out $100 and likely grief to install XP. It does crash too often, I think a little more than Win98SE, but I've seen worse products.

Windows 3.11 was better then ME, so are all the others.

Lack of stability, driver support, and too much crap I don't use.

I have found my personal fav... Windows 2000 Pro😎

Running WinME on my daughter's Burbie PC without any problems. I boots fast and has 100% compatiablity with all the educational games.

Personally I prefer Win2K Pro or Server, but that is overkill for a 2 year olds computer.

I tried it for a few months on my girls computer but to me it was slower and the features that microsoft bragged about were incomplete

for example the restore feature.

i only got it to correct a problem 2 times

but i tried it numerous times and usually ended reformatting to get rid of a problem

don't get me wrong others swear by win ME just not me lol

i just felt that win 98 se made my life easier and steered away from win me .

and compatibility with components (ati wise ) was a never ending battle as drivers were refused
again and again somtimes after they were in for weeks lol

and yes mine crashed repeatedly much more than 98 lol

there were more reasons but that was over a year or two ago and this is the first time ive even thought back to me

sorry hope this helps

My wife's Sony notebook has WinME on it, a relatively untouched install (I removed a few unnecessary apps). It freezes almost every time she tries to shut it down, or just anytime it feels like. I did have WinME on my desktop for a while and it was alright, but it still locked up way to often. Besides, I hated how it came with all that useless junk and you could not even remove it without a big hassle. Too much in-your-face product-pushing on MS's part...

I'm running Me on my system. Never had any problems that I did'nt cause😉 Tried XP for a while, but compatibility with some of the software I use was an issue. System starts-up fast, runs stable, and shuts down without any problems. All of my hardware is fully supported and funtional, and EZCD Creator works without any problems.

I thought ME was pretty cool at first because of the fast load times, but after I used it for a couple of days, I hated it. It look forever to load some programs, and it would crash also

Windows ME is by far, the worst steaming pile of crap to come out of Redmond.

Its stability, or lack of, is pathetic.
When I first got it, I figured I'd try it out, just for fun.
The first comp I tried wouldn't evn finnish the install, tried several times, and that box had been running NT 4, Win2K, and Linux, so I doubt the hardware was at fault.
Got it working on the second comp, but it was rediculously unstable, I've never seen a system crash so often.

Tried it briefly on my box at home, pretty much the same results, it installed OK, and worked somewhat OK, but it was very unstable, much more so than even 98 or 98SE.

It sucks big time, plain and simple.

Wow, this is fun. From steaming pile of crap to works OK for me.

BTW, does anybody know why it would be less stable than 98SE? Isn't it basically the same code? Is all the added stuff the problem, and how do we know this?

I had read several threads before. people syaing ME sucks. I started telling people what i had read, and to stay away from it. So i thought i should try it for myself to gather my own opinion. I formatted my 2nd system that was running W2K and did a clean install with ME. Right away it reared its ugly head. Never was stable. You want to really see how bad it is? Go from W2K to ME, you will see what junk it is. I formatted and reinstalled W2K, then installed ME on a 3rd machine........same thing, lockups! Something i just dont experience with W2K or XP. The 3rd system is a pentium 200 mmx. I removed ME and am running 98SE now. I will now tell people to avoid ME from personal experience.

I never used it on a day to day basis, but I will say that after being on 2000/XP for allmost 2 1/2 years now, I will never go back to 9x kernel's so does it ruin the MS name? No, but 2000/XP is supirior in nearly every way.

DITTO🙂😉😎

OK, I want to change my vote to "it sucks".

But, why should I encourage Microsoft by giving them another $100? There's a pretty good Dilbert cartoon about this positive reinforcement of paying a vendor to fix their problems.

When I bought a stinky car, I bought a different brand the next time and never looked back. So I'm taking Linux for a test drive.

Odd, Windows ME doesn't seem to give me any stability problems, runs smooth as silk. Faster load times for games (although not by much.) In fact, it is more stable than my previous installment of Windows 98SE. However, I too prefer Windows 2000 (had to reformat, had problems with new hardware, memory didn't like Win2000, then Win2000 CD got lost.)

I don't know why ME has such a bad rap on these boards.
I've installed it on quite a few systems, and had it on my own for almost a year and never experienced a problem on any of them.
(note, I've always disabled 'system restore')

They rushed it out. Marketing gimmick. Needed a "consumer" OS, since Windows 2000 was going to be a totally different animal.

It's crap. Period. Avoid it.
