Windows ME Update issue

Yes, I know it's old and not supported anymore. Here is the situation. I got a PC from a buddy. It was a HP XE-748 that came with the recover disks. I used them to format and to reinstall which it did perfectly.

I went straight to the windows update where I always install everything they offer by doing the critical stuff first, then the drivers and lastly the recommended stuff. I do this until there is nothing left by way of any Microsoft update. On the recovery install I had them all installed but got to where it said I had all of the critical stuff and all of the drivers already. It also said I still had 6 more updates which were all language updates for IE6 SP1. It said there were 6 to get but I can only see 4 of them and none of them will install or even download. Instead I'm taken straight to a error page.

I figured it was because of the HP integrated software so I formatted and reinstalled but this time I used a full version of Windows ME that I had. The same thing happened again. It says I have 6 recommended updates still to install but there are only 4 left that I can see and count and none of them will download in order to be installed. Why? Thanks!

The short : ME is buggy garbage, and language updates are worthless unless of course, you need them specifically because you want that language installed. If you *must* suffer w/ME, at least load the newest Firefox, as the old IE6 SP1 is flaky and full of security holes.

I would say Arkaign pretty much answered your question.
ME is pretty much a POC operating system.
I have had some machines which I could never get ME properly installed and working right. And once in awhile I would get a good install and ME wouldn't run half bad.
My two cents you would be better off loading 98SE if you want to load unsupported OS.

You was on the right right track bynot loading all the HP recovery stuff on your computer.

XP would be your best bet. And if you don't want to spend money on an OS go with Linux.

Given a choice between Windows ME and Linux, I'd go Linux.

I am primarily a Windows person, but WinME is such buggy garbage that I frankly wouldn't want to try messing with it. Ubuntu 6.10 would be a good distro to try - it's very easy to install and configure even for a Linux n00b like myself. 😉

What exactly is wrong with WinME? I've been using WinME since it came out and I haven't had any trouble with it. Perhaps you keep dropping your computer thereby damaging the hard drive and as a result, WinME won't boot?
